How do you get the best out of your divorce lawyer?
At any given time my colleagues and I have countless clients to look after. And there are only so many hours in a day to do the work. We obviously try very hard to do the best possible job for all of our clients but the reality is that that is an impossible task. So how do you make sure that you get the best out of your divorce lawyer? I find that I have some clients who get the best out of me. What is their secret?
Be focused, organised and pushy!
Focus
Have a clearly defined goal. That goal can differ from client to client. It can be: “to get divorced as fast as possible” or “to win the jurisdiction race the client is having to deal with”. It can be: “to get an amicable divorce”, or, to quote a recent client of mine: “to get as much money as possible out of my husband”. Don’t assume that your lawyer knows what your goal is. Tell them what is important for you.
Organisation
Be organised. If I say to these clients that I want something from them, say a document or an explanation then you bet I have it as soon as they are able to get it to me. And: if I ask the client for a number of documents then whatever I get is presented in very good order so that it is easy for me to consider and process.
Pushiness
Be pushy. Not in a nasty way but in a nice way. Being focussed and organised allows these clients to be on top of things. Meaning: they will work very hard and focussed until I no long have tasks or homework for them which then allows them to push the other side (via me) for documents, information, answers etc.
And this then allows my colleagues and me to work with our clients as a proper team. Aligned. So that we can get the best outcome for them and so that they can reach their goal.
